With this tool you can define a rectangular region, to crop pictures. After defining an area you can select from Main menu > Edit > Crop to work area or just use the shortcut Ctrl+A. The Work area can also be used similarly to a rectangular selection, but if you want to define a real selection, you should use the correct tools described further.

Layers tools:

Move Layer tool:

After selecting a layer from the Layers Window, you can move it using this tool. Just click and drag to move the layer in a new position. You can move both text and image layers with the same tool. If you shift+click you can use this same tool also to select the most visible layer on which you clicked.

Erase/Restore Layer tool:

This tool modifies the opacity(alpha channel) of an image layer. you can use it as a normal brush: when you change the alpha channel, the layer will blend with different intensity with the background. With this tool you can create see-through regions on the layer.

The same tool, if used in restore mode, can restore the alpha channel thus increasing the opacity of the layer.
